Haha! Welcome Maxine - thank you for joining us again! Your advice is always most helpful!
Shizlanki, there is a long list to select from. Although the Griffith SOM offers text recommendations, some of your old textbooks should do fine! Indeed, on our book list, we are told that old books should suffice. I have a few friends who finished their degrees quite some time ago, with text books around 9 years old - they are still coping ok! Here is a list of some texts you might want to keep an eye out for:
For the Medical Law, Ethics and Professional Practice component: Kerridge, I et al, (eds) (2005) Ethics and Law for the Health Professionals, 2nd Edition
For the Dr and Patient component: Clinical Examination, Talley and O’Connor, 5th Ed, Churchill Livingstone, 2006 OR Hutchison’s Clinical Methods, Swash, 21st ed, Saunders, 2002
For the Dr and knowledge of health and illness component there are SEVERAL named texts, most are acceptable. I stress that even if your books are not listed, as long as you feel comfortable with them - they should serve you well! I haven't been able to find the most recent list, but do have a look at the list given for 1st years in 2006:
http://www.griffith.edu.au/courseoutlines/OLD/med/2006/s1/1001MED_Y1_3061_CO.pdf
Hope that helps!

Removed the cached Google link - I do realise that it looked ugly , I provided it as I had experienced some difficulties opening the PDF file earlier today. Hopefully nobody else will have the same problem!

Rumour has it that the calculation for Griffith entry is:
GAMSAT + Interview Mark (/100) = Overall position
A friend of mine that scored a 70 and got an average interview mark was offered a BMP. When he/she enquired they were told that GAMSAT scores were not statistically weighted. Is this true? It seems somewhat dodgy to me.

Hello Kranky, from what I know - Gamsat scores were not weighted. I've been puzzling over something.. as the maximum mark you can get in the Gamsat is basically in the 80's and the maximum score in the interview 100, this does seem to suggest that the interview plays a greater weight in the overall score as opposed to the 50% that is published... However, all candidates are in the same boat, so I can't really complain

Hi All We do not weight GAMSAT Scores at all - Your GPA and GAMSAT gets you an invite to Interview .... THEN your GAMSAT Overall Score + Interview Score /2 = Your selection Rank (ie: 50% each GAMSAT and Interview)
Soo GPA +5, GAMSAT - Usually around the 56 overall NO section score under 50! AND Interview score

Hey max3, are the Beattie Government funded places prioritised to Queensland residents? Or is Griffith treating them like all other bonded places that they have on offer?
Also, how does this influence the allocation of offers from Griffith to Queensland residents and non-residents?

One more question, for the interviews processes that Griffith have completed (?2 or 3) would you interview around (roughly) 4 candidates for every place?

Hi MowerMan
The QLD Health Bonded Places are offered like all other bonded places. While we did make a few offers of QH Bonded places to non-QLD residents this year, it does seem that the majority of applicants are QLD Residents.
When I am doing an allocation - I put all info into a deidentified format so I am allocating places on score not on name, D.O.B, Gender, Address or any of the squillion other feilds that could in any way be seen as potentially influencing my choices!!
Hope this helps -
OOPS nearly forgot: We usually try to use a ratio of 1.5 interviews for each offer we intend to make - in reality tho, it usually changes, Eg: for entry 2007 we interviewed about 1.75 for each place.

Hi
I was wondering how many students over the age of 30 have been accepted into Griffith, and what proportion of over 30s make up the applications, and the cohorts.
Many thanks stjohn

Aww you're no fun Kimmy
You think thats young? My PBL Tutor said that she had an 18yo in one of her tute groups for first year. Now THATS bloody young.
I'm loving all the 21sts though. They are a lot of fun, and I had thought that I was past them already. So its nice

^ that is a nice positive way of looking at it... unfortunately i am only just 'out of the woods' with my own friends and their 21sts.... and now it appears to be starting again....
there are just only so many places you can buy presents from!! although i could do what one of my friends did and buy a box of perfume at a warehouse clearance sale and give it to everyone.

Reposting a Question from MedOrBust:
Hi Max,
Thanks enormously for your contributions! I have been lurking for a long time and feel it is time to question the all knowing!
Max, being an older potential entrant to Medical school, can you tell me if there is any policies on age at GU? You see my GPA is around 6.6 and my passion is there. So much so, that because my initial degree and post grad quals were over 10 years old, I went back to External Uni, working full time plus doing the equivalent full time study plus managing a family.
Hence my interest in the age question. I am in my mid 40's and will feel destroyed if the dream dies due to age. In addition, can you give a rough age demographic of first year in GU, as it is my preferred choice of Med School.

hey everyone,
i was just wondering if there are any med students currently studying at Griffith that could give their overall impressions of the course ie: contact hours, course materials and lectures, practical sessions and library resources, as I'm keen to find out a bit more about the school as I am thinking of applying there as one of my top preferences, but would like to find out a little bit more about the place before i do.
Any comments would be much appreciated cheers!!

Hey physioguy, I started at Griffith this year and I am loving it. Contact hours are only about 20 per week and then your expected to spend a further 20-30 yourself doing self directed learning (although a lot of people I am sure do less than this........ but you didn't here that from me!). The course in terms of material is mainly delivered online. All your lecture notes etc come from the medschool website. All your learning issues are posted there and all your PBL scenarios are done from the computer. Each case has a lot of reference material also put online for you covering what you need to know, although some of the time you will need textbooks to back this info up, mostly the online references are adequet to cover what you need to know. In terms of practical sessions, the anatomy labs are brand new state of the art and awesome, as yet I have not done any other pracs such as path or histo but I am sure they will be on the agenda soon. The library onsite is quite small comparitively but getting bigger (in terms of books etc). However the main campus is not to far away ( 10 min drive) and the libraries there are bigger and better. You can get books sent over from there or any of the other griffith campus libraries should you need them. So all in all I am very happy with the place. If you have any further queries PM me. May take a while to get back to you as I only manage to drop in here once a week or so at the moment but I will get there eventually. cheers Kurly

I was wondering whether it was feasible to be a med student at Griffith and live in Brisbane? It looks like the timetable isn't too bad, especially in first year, and it should be possible to drive to the Coast and back every day. I imagine a lot of students would be from Brisbane?

TrannieLe planned to commute from Brisbane to Griffith every day. I am not sure show she is going. Her lack of posting in the forum might be an indication of how much spare time she has these days. Are you prepared to travel two hours (each way) by public transport? Do you have a car which would shorten the travel time?
