 Interview Offer Calculator
« Thread Started on May 22, 2008, 9:06pm »

Hi all,

I have seen a lot of members ask questions about whether a GAMSAT mark/ GPA is suitable for a school.

Please find a link to an excel spreadsheet that I have designed and wunderbunny has kindly agreed to host.

If you enter your GAMSAT mark and GPA it will advise, based on last years details, which unis you can consider as realistic options to apply to.

The link is http://www.pagingdr.net/info/files/Admission/Uni_Interview_Calc_2010.xls

It also has options to suggest if your GPA or GAMSAT is significantly above last years mark. You can change the details of how much is "significant" if you head to the sheet marked "data".

Please read all the details and post here if you want some more help.

Don't PM me with your questions - I probably will not answer them, and if I were to, it would only encourage people - also, many other people probably have the same questions.

Please note, there is no comparison with dent/pharm - either you want to do med or you don't (my opinion)

Also, please note - all care, no responsibility.

Good luck to you all.

Irish

Edit: I meant to say - wunderbunny did lots of work with me to get this up and running - thanks to WB for all her help!

Irish, what a wonderful job you have done! It must have taken you ages!!

Wow!

The cut-offs for Griffith and Flinders must ber reaaaaally high. I thought my GAMSAT/GPA of 66/6.66 would give me an 'easy chance' but no cigar!

It's not downloading for me at the moment, probably because a bunch of people are trying to download it at the same time. If it does work then you're some kind crazy computer/excel genius....some might say you were god like. Not me personally....but I'm sure someone out there will use those words to describe you.

EDIT: I change my mind, you are godlike. Damn you Usyd and your ridiculously high gamsat requirement

Irishkiwi you have done a great job! THANKS!

Yuyu-If you read what is written on the excel file you will note that he has used the ((GPA/7)x 100) + GAMSAT formula... as stated this isn't really applicable for schools with a HURDLE GPA like Griffith, UQ etc. It should be used as a GUIDE only....

Is there a limit to the number of people who can download/open this at any one time?

As far as I know, there is no download limit. Keep trying. If the problem still persists, we can email it to you. :)

[image] very much, irishkiwi. I knew it would be well received but I did not expect the response to be so fast! [image]

The worksheet now includes a hyperlink to this thread. I don't envisage any further revisions unless we use gpa/gamsat combinations for Flinders and UND. it is not totally accurate but it is a little better than GAMSAT on its own.

yuyuandmarmar

The reason that you dont get an easy yes is because the GPA is a hurdle requirement. You cant get "better" than meeting the requirement - either you do or you dont....

Hope that helps

Hi WB, yes I am surprised too - thanks for your help and comments.

With regard to the link to here, can I suggest that you merge the four cells that cover the hyperlink - otherswise you have to be on the extreme left to get the link to work

Thanks so much for this worksheet! makes it so much easier to consider all options.. just wondering what you meant by the note ANU, Deakin, UMelb and UWA do not use raw GAMSAT marks, what do they use instead??

thanks again!

These unis combine GPA and GAMSAT (equally weighted).

thanks irishkiwi/WB. However I think there is a bug. =D

With 0 gamsat score, some school gives yes as well.

Basically the excel is not checking both minimum conditions are met.

Edit: Also with that factor of 10. How accurate is it?

Hi all, thanks for your kind comments.

MML, with regard to your possible bug - you are correct, however this wasnt meant to be a definitive exact type calculator. It was designed to give candicates an indication of what unis would accept them.

Basically, I assumed that anyone with a GAMSAT less than 50 overall wouldnt be applying. Its not something I plan on fixing for this year

But, thanks for point it out.

Also the factor of 10 it has no accuracy or scientific basis whatsoever. It was just designed into the program for people to get an idea of how a "stronger" GAMSAT/GPA might be perceived.

What each individual considers tro be a "stronger" GPA/GAMSAT is very much open to interpretation, but the ability to change the figures is available on the "data" page as you see fit.

Personally, I think that if your GPA is 0.5 above required (or cutoff) and your GAMSAT is 10 above the cutoff from last year, it is reasonable to anticipate an interview. At the end of the day this depends on the number of applications to the uni for next that are "stronger" than yours.

Good luck

I think your interview calculator is slightly broken. For sydney, I think you have the wrong weighting on gamsat. I.e a gpa of 5.5 and gamsat of 70 should stand a easy chance of interview, assuming the past years gamsat cutoff of 61.

Cheers

That thing is fantastic. Wow. Thankyou. I'm hoping, "slim chance" really does mean I have a slim chance cos Melbourne Uni is damn hard to get into with a low GPA, but who cares! I've got a slim chance! Woohoo!

Hi eddyl,

actually, as I understand the GPA cutoff for sydney last year was 5.5 and the GAMSAT was 61. The "easy" category would require a GPA of at least 6 and a GAMSAT of 71 - have a read of the disclaimers/comments.....

susanwilson - glad you liked it, I hoped you read the disclamer also - uni melb, usually has much higher marks - I would be very cautious about putting melb first - unless of course it is more impt to go to the right uni rather than any uni

Good luck to you both - fingers and toes crossed for you

I thought USyd was a GPA hurdle of 5.5, so assuming you were over that the chance of interview would depend entirely on your GAMSAT?

sorry if i'm wrong!

Hi lucy1987 - my bad - Usyd is GPA hurdle of 5.5 - I was responding to eddyls comments about why they hadnt got an "easy yes" for interview.

So, if you have a GPA above 5.5 (meet the hurdle) then the cutoff for interview last year was 61 - it would be fair to say that anyone with a GAMSAT of 10 points above the cutoff (ie71) would be expected to be offered an interview this year.

The idea of 10 GAMSAT points as an easy yes is purely a guide, and to question whether 70 is that much worse than 71, I think is a case of splitting hairs.....

The calculator is for med only. Not dent. Last year's cutoff for dentistry was 58. I think it could go a little higher this year because they will be offering fewer places.

Tinkerbell, given that the cut-off is a 4.00 GPA which is pass average, you have no need to worry in this category. From memory, offers two years ago were down to a 55/56 Gamsat - this is probably what you have to worry more about. Even with a good score in these two areas, the practical skills (wire-bending) and interview should be the things you should worry about, I reckon!

The wire bending test is no longer a part of the admission process. I was there last year. USyd Dent applicants now undergo the same process as the USyd Med applicants. The interviewers cannot tell them apart when they are interviewed.

Last year, I knew a girl who applied with GAMSAT 57 and she was not interviewed because the cutoff was 58.

Well, that's an interesting change! I guessed that the interviewing process would be different to when I applied a little while back, but not that much! Additionally, given the nature of some of the questions I was asked at the time - you'd definitely be able to differentiate between medical and dental candidates! Haha! I guess I'm just too far removed from the admission processing now to be up to date! :)

Hi there-

With USYD this year, I understand that those who have applied for Med and Dent will be going to the Med interviews, and those who have applied only for Dent will be going to Dent interviews to be held later in the year. So, if you are applying for both Dent and Med- yep- you are an anonymous candidate. However, seeing that those that have only applied for Dent have their own interviews, I think the jig is up... so to speak ;)

From Usyd's mailing list:
3. Interview of local applicants
In 2008 interviews will be conducted in Sydney in conjunction with the Faculty of Dentistry. The interviews will be conducted from 29 September to 3 October for USydMP applicants on the main campus and from 8 to 10 October for BDent applicants at the Edward Ford Bldg and the Sydney Dental Hospital. Applicants who have applied to both Medicine and Dentistry will be required to attend one interview only in the week of 29 September.
