For those who are having trouble calculating their GPA or want an easier way.

This file has all the formulae preset, all you need to do is fill in the gaps, there is an example as well as a blank sheet for you to fill in. For your convenience, I have also duplicated the conversion table. (it's all in the tabs)

This GPA thing is crap. I have all these marks like 94% which are weighted just as heavily as 80%. Then I get one 73% and brings GPA down heaps!

I think I'm just making a mistake with the 'units' column. At my uni, they use credit points and each subject is worth 12 credit points. Is that what the units column refer to?

Cheers :)

beatrix: lol, if I invented the system, you'd get credited for your 94%'s ;)

sonique32: thank you.

docmeup: Yes that's more or less it. That column isn't necessarily important; it's just in case some subjects are 'worth less than other subjects' for whatever reason. For most people, the numbers in the units column should all be the same. e.g: at ANU all main subjects are worth 6 units/credit points so I would enter 6 for each entry in that column. -see the example spreadsheet that is included in that document, it's down the bottom in the little tabs.

You submit the marks you already have. The medical school will estimate what you will get for your final year. If you get an offer it will be a provisional offer. They will ask for your final results to confirm the offer. Many candidates will be in your position.

With regards to the GPA calculator template, the little box i saw with a score out of 42 - I am assuming that is the 'weighted' GPA for Uni's that uses weighted GPA? e.g. 1x1st year score + 2x2nd year score + 3x3rd year score ?

hey every1, this might b a silly question but here goes.

last yr i finished biomedical science at monash, got my 3 yrs of marks from there, but this yr i am doing first yr undergrad physiotherapy. I would assume that only my biomed marks count (last 3 yrs of previously COMPLETED degree), and my physio marks won't. however i jus want to confirm, will my physio marks this yr count for my GPA or not?

Hi,

I have a lot of questions on my GPA. I undertook my degree in NZ.

Its is a little confusing, but basically most papers were worth 6 points and you need 120 for a degree.

My major required 24 points at Level 3, 36 points at Level 2. Apart from that - as long as satisfied co&pre-requisite requirements I got my degree.

Then to complicate things, I undertook Year 3 part time over 2 years and took a Level 2 paper in Year 4 and a Level 1 paper in Year 3.

So for my GPA calculation - do I consider the 2 part time years as seperate or 1?
Also, the Level 2 Paper, do I count that as in my final year, or the Year 2?

Confused?

I am

I look forward to your help

Most universities want to know the level of the subject you took, not the calendar year in which you took it. So when the GPA calculator, which ACER has yet to release, asks for year 1, year 2, year 3 subjects, you should think of them as level 1, level 2, level 3 as they were in your course. The part-time full time years are not relevant. Just use the level (of difficulty) of the subjects.

When I say most universities, I think Usyd is the exception, but you should check the 2008 Admission Guide to be sure. We ask all members to read the 2008 Admission Guide rather than relying on hearsay. There is a link for it on the news bar on the main forum page.

Hey I've read and reread and reread the GAMSA guide re GPA, and think I've got it worked out, but wanted to test the logic with othe pagingdr peeps:

I have a full BSc (3 years FT) and a BEc done over 3 years for which I got roughly 33% credits ie. I only had to do about 2 years worth of subject in the three BEc years (actually I did a little bit more because the course points wouldn't divide into 3 evenly, but let's forget that).
For all of this then, I'm assuming ACER want my last 3 years F/T study, so I have to go back from BEc into 3rd year BSc to make that up.

My question is - Is the right GPA calculation method to:
- Sequence the last 3 years F/T study load ie. all of BEc and the final year of BSc in order of date subject was taken
- Allocate each subject to a 'GPA year' from 1 to 3 working forward in the sequence
- Then calc a GPA from these 3 'years' that actually occurred over 4?

None of these intricacies end up changing my GPA much from the other simpler options eg. just use last 3 years BEc grades, but I'm interested in ensuring ACER get's it right and I can confirm what they come up with.

Ta everyone - if this hasn't bored you to tears!

To Blad and everyone else, the whole GPA thing is not worth sweating over. If you have a mix of subjects credited from another course, start with whatever year level they were at in the original course. If you still can't work it out, then do it in a way that gives you an advantage.

The med school admissions offices will check your transcript against what you entered into ACER. That is why they need to see original transcripts. If they think it should be done differently, they will work it out for themselves.

As you know, the different unis have different ways of working it out. You only have one opportunity to key in your subjects when you send them to ACER. It is inevitable that the med school admissions office will recalculate your GPA.

ok thanks for that wunderbunny I'll worry about it only if the 'system' comes up with something bizarre.
It's a bit academic for me anyway as I've got a crap GPA (5.2ish) but OK GAMSAT score and can only apply to a couple of places anyway.

If anyone wants the crazy spreadsheet with macros and s[image] t that has a go at all this, send me a message and I'll email it to you. Warning: it uses visual basic!

Wow! A GPA calculator coded in Visual Basic! I am impressed. [image]

I have a cheap 15-minute Excel worksheet. I also have a souped up Excel worksheet, which puts all the grades in a lookup table. I type 'D', 'C' and 'H' and it comes up with the correct GAMSA points. It does weighted and unweighted averages. It has protection on the calculated fields so that I don't type over them by accident. It is so complex, I can't work out how to use it any more. That is why I built the cheap 15-minute version. ;D

Hello all,

maybe i am the only one with this issue, but i'll ask anyway. I am in my 4th and final year of B.Phty. In doing my GPA calculation, do i enter in my results from years 1, 2 and 3 or just from years 2 and 3?

Another issue also, is if i did, say a subject in third year, that was titled STAT2100, even though i did it in Year 3, but it is a 2nd year type subject, does anything change when i enter it? ie do i put it under my second year subjects?

sorry to ask, but the acer booklet doesn't seem to answer my questions....

thanks for any help!

Hi guys,

I'm having trouble with my GPA calculation... Can someone please enlighten me as towhat I should do. I'm applying for UQ. I went through one year of bach ex sci then changed to biomed. I failed a subin ex sci, did it again and passed it. This subject gave me credit towards my biomed degree. The question is do I put the fail in the first calendar year with the pass or not? I think I will be putting it in just in case there's a problem with it all. Any opinions? UQ states that all subs that helps finish or all subs done within the degree should be added into the equation. So I think I will be doing it.

I have done the research so please don't ignore me :( I'm just making sure that's all.. [image]

Thanks in advance! [image]

Hi Wannabe.

I think the rounding depends. Sydney Uni for example, explicitly states that you cannot round up (eg. 5.49 does not round to 5.5). I'm not sure about other unis though. In any case, Acer will do all of the calculation for you (not that they will necessarily get it right...grrr.....but that's another matter).

Acer hasn't. Even though I know that they've read my emails, as they replied about unlocking the page so I could update my scores.

I haven't emailed Flinders yet. I'm not even sure if I want to.....

I'm just not sure at this stage what I should do. I know that Acer would definitely get back to me if I had a lawyer write them a threatening letter, but I don't know how useful that would actually be.

The only advantage at this point that I have is that at least I'm studying at the same campus I'm applying to. If Acer recalculates my GPA incorrectly again, I should be able to go in personally and get the USyd med faculty to calculate it properly.

Edit: Now that you've brought it up, I think I'll send an email to Tina down at Flinders tomorrow...
